Namaqualand’s Flowers Burst Into Bloom

Namaqualand is known for its daisies and the spectacular flower show it puts on after its winter rains, when the whole region explodes in a sea of colour. The area is part of the Karoo-Namib biome, which consists of, among others, 1700 species of leaf succulents, the majority of which are dwarf forms. There are also stone plants, which count among the smallest perennial plants in the world, and geophytes.

Vegetation types aside, it’s the flowers that people come to see; flowers such as the famous Namaqualand daisy, the quiver tree and a range of succulents.

The area has three national parks: the Namaqua National Park, which is near Kamieskroon; Goegap Nature Reserve, near Springbok and which includes the Hester Malan Wild Flower Garden; and the Richtersveld National Park on the Orange River. Richtersveld has the distinction of being the only mountain desert park in SA.
