Named after Sir George Grey, the governor of the Cape at the time, Greyton began its life as an agricultural village in 1854. Today, populated by people who’ve left the big cities for a quieter life as well as some authentic yokels, it is a weekend favourite with widespread fans. The air here seems thicker, pleasantly heady with a quiet historical charm and the scent of roses.
Many original buildings still stand in Greyton, their back stoeps and hallways as busy (or perhaps more) as they were more than 150 years ago. Resting peacefully about an hour an a half’s scenic drive from Cape Town, and just outside Genadendal, the country’s oldest mission station, Greyton has a charm all of its own.
